Janette
Ireland
Artist Profile:
Janette Ireland is an experienced mosaic artist who works on both
public and private commissions.
Janette's training and education combined art and science with basket-making,
embroidery, carpentry, gardening and a love of the environment.
After working for a number of years as a teacher, Janette subsequently
trained in pebble mosaic fabrication and installation and she is
now an established mosaic artist.
Janette's mosaics feature in public commissions in places as far
apart as Bentham and Bournemouth, Somerset and Stevenage and in
private commissions from Edinburgh to Southampton.
"A practical background has enabled me to combine pebble mosaic
work with smalti mosaics, glass as marbles or nuggets and carved
limestone, which widens the range of texture and colour.
Working with an upside-down technique, which produces a level walking
surface and uses non-shrink grout for durability, the mosaics are
made with very small stones to produce fine and detailed designs.
By using different shapes and orientation of pebbles, I create effects
akin to stitches or weaving. My designs are tactile and I enjoy
the challenge of pattern making within bold outlines. Each mosaic
is site-specific and can be any shape or size, set within paving
or under water. They provide a surface suitable for walkers, cycles,
pushchairs, wheelchairs or traffic."
